As a celebrated Engineering Professor at UAB, Dr. Thompson profoundly influenced generations of engineers through his engaging undergraduate and graduate courses in metallurgy, ceramics, and materials science. Even after retiring from teaching, he continued to contribute as a leader at UAB, serving on the UAB Long-Term Planning Committee, the School of Engineering Advisory Council, and as President of the UAB National Alumni Society. His efforts earned him the prestigious UAB Volunteer of the Year Award, a testament to his unwavering commitment to education and institutional excellence.
Beyond the classroom, Dr. Thompson's devotion to his field has been equally impactful. As a Fellow of organizations such as the American Welding Society, the American Society for Materials, and the National Academy of Forensic Engineers, he has played a pivotal role in shaping advancements in materials science. His innovative contributions are reflected in numerous publications, patents, and recognition, including being named Engineer of the Year by the Engineering Council of Birmingham.
Dr. Thompson’s entrepreneurial spirit shines through his founding of Vista Engineering, a thriving consulting and design firm that has completed over 500 projects across 14 states and three continents. Under his leadership, the firm has spearheaded cutting-edge research and development in collaboration with agencies such as the Department of Defense, NASA, the National Institutes of Health, and the National Science Foundation. His work has consistently bridged the gap between innovation and practical application, reflecting his vision for the future of science and engineering.
