The piston head and its aluminum alloy microstructure are shown in this picture. The background yellow hue is the aluminum matrix. Mixed in this matrix are a number of silicates from blocky to linear to Chinese script. Each particle’s shape and chemistry reflects the engineering plan to create a part that is tough and strong enough to withstand hundreds of thousands of explosions and compressions while thermally dissipating the high temperatures of the gas explosions.
